Dual Monitor One Screen White: Port & Signal Handshake
When one monitor in a dual-display setup turns completely white while the other functions normally, the issue is almost always a digital handshake failure (HDCP), a Display Stream Compression (DSC) bandwidth crash over DisplayPort, or a corrupted multi-monitor profile in Windows.

Cycle Windows Display Projection Mode via Shortcut
Press Win + P to open the Project flyout. Press the Down Arrow once to select "Duplicate", press Enter. Wait 5 seconds, then press Win + P and select "Extend" again. This forces Windows to tear down and reconstruct multi-monitor virtual framebuffers.
Match Refresh Rates Between Both Displays
Navigate to Windows Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. If Monitor 1 is running at 144Hz and Monitor 2 is running at 60Hz, GPUs can experience memory clock synchronization bugs. Temporarily set both monitors to 60Hz to test stability.
Swap Display Cables & GPU Output Ports
Swap the video cables between your monitors. If the white screen follows the cable to the other monitor, replace the cable. If the white screen stays on the exact same monitor regardless of port or cable, that monitor internal T-Con board has failed.
Bypass Multi-Monitor USB-C / Thunderbolt Docking Station
If using a laptop dock, disconnect it and plug the offending monitor directly into your laptop native HDMI or USB-C port. DisplayLink driver crashes and dock MST (Multi-Stream Transport) chip lockups are notorious for causing white screens.
Device-Specific Engineering Notes
- Nvidia G-Sync / AMD FreeSync: Having G-Sync enabled on one display and disabled on another can cause the second display to flash solid white during desktop video playback.
- Daisy-Chaining (DisplayPort MST): If daisy-chaining two monitors via DisplayPort Out, ensure DisplayPort 1.2 or 1.4 is explicitly toggled in the first monitor OSD.
